Google sets Mobile-Friendly deadline of April 21
Friday, March 20th, 2015
Is your website mobile-friendly? If not, you should take notice as Google has officially set April 21, 2015 as the deadline for when their new ranking algorithms go into place for mobile search results.
The new algorithms will place heavier emphasis on making sure mobile search engine result pages (Mobile-SERP) favor websites that are classified as mobile-friendly.
The goal, Google says, is to make it easier for users "to get relevant, high-quality search results that are optimized for their devices."
The driving force behind this update is the fact that Google expects search engine traffic from mobile devices to exceed that from traditional desktops and laptops by the end of 2015.
This change will ensure users searching for information on their mobile devices are sent to websites that render properly and have mobile-optimized usability.
With nearly 50% of web users searching from mobile devices, companies with websites that are not mobile-friendly will experience a significant decrease in organic search traffic.
Google won't say exactly how significant the difference in results will be but they have confirmed it will be far more visible that their previous Panda and Penguin updates. Both of which significantly impacted search queries.
Is my website mobile-friendly?
You can check if your website is mobile friendly by searching for your website on a mobile phone. If your website is considered to be mobile-friendly as determined by Google's algorithms, it will say "Mobile-friendly" under your web address. See the picture above for an example.
